A gift from God for ourselves and the deceased
Every day, in Montligeon and in many churches in the world, it is possible to benefit from the plenary indulgence, either for oneself or for a deceased person.
Asking for the indulgence: an act of love and hope
Pope Francis declared a holy year in 2025. “Now the time has come for a new Jubilee to invite everyone to an intense experience of the love of God that awakens in hearts the sure hope of salvation in Christ.”
Why ask for the indulgence?
To be freed from sin and its consequences
Confession is the first liberation. It gives us the assurance that God forgives our sins, especially the ones we are most ashamed of. Through it, God can heal our hearts. We are then reconciled, returned to His friendship.
But we must also be freed from the consequences of sin. We can feel how sin leaves scars in us and the ones we hurt. We need to be freed from those. What is broken must be completely fixed.
Here on Earth, we can fix some of the consequences of our sins through acts of love for God and others, called acts of prayer, charity, and penance. These acts help heal our souls.
After death, reparation is still possible. However it is in God’s hands. He cleanses us in Purgatory. He heals us with his infinite love, with the “touch of his heart”.
To experience God’s unlimited mercy
We may be tempted to think that we carry the consequences of our sin alone, which leads us to despair.
But Jesus sacrificed himself for us on the cross. By offering himself in reparation of our sins, he earned us forgiveness once and for all.
Through the plenary indulgence, God offers us his unlimited mercy to repair and heal us completely from the consequences of our sins.
You can ask for the indulgence for yourself or for a deceased person. The Church then presents this gift to God so that this person may be welcome in Heaven among the saints. The indulgence manifests the solidarity between the living and the deceased.
Five requirements to receive the indulgence
Every day, in Montligeon or in Jubilee churches, it is possible to ask for a plenary indulgence for oneself or a deceased person. This stands until December 28th, 2025. Here are the requirements to meet (on the same day, if possible).
1. Rejecting sin
To sincerely repent and decide to absolutely avoid sin.
2. Receiving God’s forgiveness
We need God’s help. Let us lean on him, not on our own strengths.
If you are at the Shrine, confessions are at 3:15pm on Sundays and 5:45pm on weekdays.
You need to receive the sacrament of reconciliation within 20 days of asking for the indulgence. One confession suffices if you ask for several indulgences during those 20 days.
If you aren’t baptized, have you thought about asking to receive baptism?
3. Participating in the Eucharist
Receiving the body of Christ to be in communion with him and be fortified.
4. Praying for the pope
For example, one “Our Father” and one “Hail Mary” for the intentions of the pope
5. Acts of prayer, mercy, penance
Here in Montligeon or in any Jubilee Church, you can attend either:
- Mass
- Lauds or vespers
- The rosary or the way of the cross
- The eucharistic adoration
Or at home, you can perform either:
- an act of mercy (e.g. visiting the sick)
- an act of penance (e.g. fasting on Fridays)
A second indulgence every day for a deceased person
During the 2025 Jubilee, you may ask for a second plenary indulgence every day for a soul in purgatory. To do so, you must receive the eucharsit during another mass on the same day and perform an act of charity. The Church especially encourages any work of mercy and penance.
Prayer of the Jubilee
Father in heaven,
may the faith you have given us
in your son Jesus Christ, our brother,
and the flame of charity enkindled
in our hearts by the Holy Spirit,
reawaken in us the blessed hope
for the coming of your Kingdom.
May your grace transform us
into tireless cultivators of the seeds of the GOspel.
May those seeds transform from within both humanity and the whole cosmos
in the sure expectation
of a new heaven and a new earth,
when, with the powers of Evil vanquished,
your glory will shine eternally.
May the grace of the Jubilee
reawaken in us, Pilgrims of Hope,
a yearning for the treasures of heaven.
May that same grace spread
the joy and peace of our Redeemer
throughout the earth.
To you our God, eternally blessed,
be glory and praise for ever.
Amen
