Restoring the Stained Glass Windows in the Towers of the Basilica

Work began on September 17, 2025

On September 17, the sanctuary launched a new phase in the restoration of the basilica. The work began with the stained-glass windows in the towers, entrusted to master stained-glass artist Cyril Gouty. “We began by dismantling the most fragile bays,” he explains. This first phase is part of the overall restoration program planned for the building over several years.

Introducing master glassmaker Cyril Gouty

“My name is Cyril Gouty, master glassworker, and I work with my workshop, which specializes in heritage restoration,” he explains. His team came to Montligeon to work on stained glass windows damaged by time and weather. Their skill consists in dismantling, cleaning and restoring each piece of glass before replacing it in its original structure.

The technical stages of restoration

The project involves several bays stacked one on top of the other. “We’re working on the trilobes and lower sections, where the glass is most fragile. Once they are removed, we bring the windows back down to the workshop for restoration”, explains Cyril Gouty. The work also includes temporary caulking of openings, to protect the basilica while the stained-glass windows are away. Once they have been cleaned, strengthened and set to new, they will be replaced in the basilica’s towers.

A symbolic project for the basilica

This work on the stained glass windows marks an important stage in the preservation of the Basilica of Montligeon. The aim is to preserve the beauty and light of this place of prayer, visited by thousands of pilgrims every year. Thanks to the loyal support of donors, this heritage restoration project is progressing step by step. “Our aim is to restore the stained glass windows to their original glory, while respecting the history of the site,” concludes Cyril Gouty.
