For the 8th year in a row, on Sunday June 30, over 300 bikers met in La Chapelle-Montligeon to celebrate an event of brotherliness and friendhip. All kinds of motorcycles, including mopeds, Harleys and Japanese motorbikes, gathered in a fun atmosphere after mass for the blessing of both bikes and motorcyclists. Women bikers were in greater numbers this time than ever before. Could that be a sign of the times?
Blessing the bikers means caring for their security
Security is at the forefront of concerns for all the motorcyclists attending. Émilie tells us about some frightful moments on the road. “Several times I got a pretty big scare but I also thought I was born under a lucky star.” The yearly blessing means a lot for her: “I tell myself that coming here in La Chapelle is very important. This is such a truly catholic place, the only one where you can really be protected.”
Anthony agrees, such protection is paramount, especially after loosing friends in motorbike accidents. The ceremony is both a time of togetherness and reflection. The blessing of bikers in Montligeon is akin to a request of divine protection for those on the road as well a tribute to those missing.
“Being on the road with friends, even if they are missing”
“Today, coming to La Chapelle-Montligeon is very important for me. It means riding with friends. Even if they are missing, they are still present through our passion”, Anthony told us.
He emphasizes the spiritual meaning of the event: “It encourages me to carry on riding. When I come here I remember that we are protected, even against the hazards on the road.” Receiving the blessing and being protected. The spiritual side of the gathering is essential for most participants. As Émilie told us, “I got pretty big scares when I was riding but I think I have been very lucky. When you come here at La Chapelle, you feel protected. Receiving the blessing each year really matters.” Anthony goes on: “Although I usually ride alone, I came with several others this time. It is a good opportunity to meet great people and to feel supported.”
A warm, fun atmosphere
The blessing is a very friendly event, where everybody feels welcome. A participant who has discovered this special day for the first time shares his enthusiasm:
“This is the first time I am doing this outing with my daughter and motocyclists buddies. Last year was great. The atmosphere is wonderful, you meet excellent people.”
