Thierry and Valérie Lemercier are pipe organ builders in Le Mans. In September 2022, they came to tune the great organ of Montligeon before the concert of the 39th European Heritage Days. Welcome to the inside of the great organ at the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Montligeon!

Thierry and Valérie Lemercier explain their work tuning the great organ at the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Montligeon.

For over 15 years, Thierry and Valérie have been caring for the 1608 tubes that make the drone, trumpet and celestial voice ring out. Together with Valérie, they tune the instrument twice a year. It’s a real precision work.

The great organ at the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Montligeon has been functional since 2014.Before that, it was installed in the choir of the church, while the gallery remained empty. In 2010, the organ was moved, restored and enlarged by the Lemercier company. This included the addition of a third resonance keyboard for a fuller sound palette.

The great organ

The choir organ was built by Joseph Gutschenritter Père & Fils, organ builders in Paris. “It contained 16 stops divided between the two manual keyboards and the pedalboard”, says Abbé Labelle in his book Mgr Buguet et l’Œuvre de Montligeon.
